As tropical rains begin falling on North Georgia, the forecast for supper is potato soup. It’s fall and the weather is nasty, so comfort food becomes a necessity. Potato soup is a simple dish, generally consisting of potatoes, water, butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Other bits and bobs can be added, such as cheese and ham or bacon, but the base is simple. It’s easy to make, and it warms the body and soul!
The gospel can be the same simple thing if you just consider the basics. Man is sinful and needs a savior (potatoes). God provides the Savior (water…living water!). By God’s grace and the death and resurrection of His Son, sinful man is redeemed (butter and milk). Redeemed man gains eternal life with his Creator (salt and pepper). An entirely sufficient plan on the part of God the Father to rescue His beloved creation emerges from these “ingredients.” No garnish required!
It may seem overly simplistic, but that is the nature of the gospel. God’s wisdom seems foolish to man, but even God’s “folly” is beyond man’s greatest wisdom. (1 Corinthians 1:18-31).
